Early Reading Intervention Program
Early Success is an early reading intervention program that focuses on both word recognition and comprehension strategies delivered to groups of six or less Grade 1 Regular Program students. Student selection is based on early reading achievement data provided by the Senior Kindergarten teachers along with data collected through the program's Assessment Tasks of Grade 1 students. As the program progresses, an "I can read" attitude quickly develops.

Education in Ontario is a partnership between the the provincial Ministry of Education and local School Boards. Ontario's Ministry of Education sets curriculum policy and defines what teachers are required to teach and students are expected to learn in each grade and subject from JK through Grade 12. Through the Education Quality and Accountability Office, student achievement across the province is assessed, and recommendations on improving student success are made.

In June 2004, the government announced $160 million in new resources for the "Education Foundations" Program to assist more students each year reach high levels in reading, writing, comprehension and math. Ontario's goal is to see 75 per cent of 12-year-olds reaching the provincial standard on province wide reading, writing and math tests by 2008. Initiatives that began in the 2004/2005 school year are slated to continue through 2008 and are focused on smaller classes in the primary grades, the provision of the latest teaching resources, techniques and training guides, and specially trained Lead Teachers in grades JK - Grade 6.

With a consistent province-wide framework ensured, teaching and assessment strategies are left to the professional judgment of school boards and teachers, enabling them to address individual student needs and deliver the curriculum in a context that reflects the needs of the communities they serve.
