to One Grade 9 Math Program
Grade 9 students in all our high schools are blending technology
with current math curriculum through an innovative program
in partnership with Apple Canada. Students are able to conceptualize
the abstracts of mathematics through the use of Apple iBook
laptops running a suite of mathematics applications. Math
teachers at higher grades are beginning to look at ways they
can use the technology to better deliver parts of their curriculum
as well.
Dual Credit Program
The Dual Credit program is a School/College/Work Initiative
that is offered by the Sudbury Catholic District School Board
in partnership with Cambrian College. The Dual Credit program
is intended to encourage students struggling to remain engaged
to complete their secondary school education and to consider
continuing on to postsecondary education. The program provides
opportunities to explore career prospects; and it ensures
a successful transition to College or apprenticeship programs.
The Dual Credit program provides secondary school students
the opportunity to earn a number of credits by participating
in apprenticeship training or postsecondary courses that count
towards both their secondary school diploma and their postsecondary
diploma. For more information, contact Gaston
Theriault or visit the Dual
Credit Program on the Cambrian College web site.
Early Reading Intervention Program
Early Success is an early reading intervention program
that focuses on both word recognition and comprehension strategies
delivered to groups of six or less Grade 1 Regular Program
students. Student selection is based on early reading achievement
data provided by the Senior Kindergarten teachers along with
data collected through the program's Assessment Tasks of Grade
1 students. As the program progresses, an "I can read"
attitude quickly develops.
Best Start and Daycare Centres
A number of community schools within the Sudbury Catholic
District School Board have Daycare Centres, Early Years Centres,
or Before and After School programs. Check with your community
school to see what may be available in your neighborhood.
Safe Schools Initiatives
'Peaceful Schools' is a broad set of initiatives designed
to alleviate and reduce the risk of bullying in our schools.
Schools implement a variety of creative approaches centred
around staff, peer and self monitoring, organized activities,
positive reinforcement, conflict resolution programs, guest
speakers, clear expectations and behavior modeling.
Empowered Student Partnership (ESP)
St. Charles College students are participating with Greater
Sudbury Police and the Sudbury and District Health Unit in
a pilot project designed to give students an opportunity to
get involved in solving problems specific to their schools.
The key objectives of the program are to stand up against
relationship violence, drug abuse and bullying where it exists
and to take action to promote a safe school environment and
become a driving force behind all safe school initiatives.
Community Builders
The Youth Leadership Initiative is an innovative community-based
program developed in partnership with elementary schools that
promotes sustainable change in school cultures. It is based
on a leadership model that empowers students in Grades 5-8
to educate their peers about how racism and other mistreatments/exclusion
affect us all. Community Builders helps schools become more
equitable and inclusive.
Goals for Growth
Our elementary panel has introduced an Ontario produced program
entitled 'Goals for Growth' from Grades 1 - 3. The program
teaches children to set goals which in turn empowers children
to be responsible for their own learning. Goals for Growth
is an early years component of 'Choice into Action', a guidance
and career education program that students are involved in
from Grade 1 through Grade 12.
Dearness Conservation
Dearness Conservation (DC) is a practical, student-driven,
activity-based program that brings environmental education
alive in our schools. A cooperative team of students, teachers,
principals, custodians and parents work together with Dearness
Conservation partners in a multi-year program designed to
increase sustainability by helping schools conserve resources
and protect the environment.
Rainbows
Rainbows is a not-for-profit international organization that
provides training and curricula for establishing peer support
groups to individuals of all ages who have experienced a death,
divorce or other painful transition in the family. Rainbows
goals include facilitating a healthy acceptance of the changes
that have taken place in the lives of these individuals. The
Rainbows program is offered at several SCDSB schools through
teacher and staff volunteers
Risk Watch Program
Risk Watch is a comprehensive injury prevention curriculum
based program for children in preschool through to Grade 8.
The program provides students with the skills and knowledge
they need to be much safer and prevent injuries. Risk Watch
activities combine teaching and imagination to help children
learn to promote their own safety, as well as the safety and
well-being of their friends, families and communities. Risk
Watch addresses eight specific risk areas, and each of the
eight learning modules can easily be integrated into core
subjects such as health, language arts and physical education.
