Welcome to the Teaching with the Net and other Technologies program. Many of our kids already know how to use a variety of communication information technologies (CIT). The concern is whether or not they know how to use these technologies skillfully in order to learn and solve problems. Fostering the use of CIT in our classrooms will provide our students with the opportunity to develop and use the types of critical thinking skills needed to compete in today's society. In order to accomplish this, it is imperative that each one of us take an active role in developing our own skills in learning about new tools and techniques in the teaching profession. To assist you with this, the TNT program is being developed to provide you with a variety of self directed learning resources and other support in the areas of teaching and learning with technology.

There are no provincial standards or requirements for teachers to take professional development activities or courses. Teachers identify their own training needs and take professional development activities to address these needs (OME, 2000). TNT is a voluntary program available to all SCDSB staff. You can enter and participate in the program at any level that you feel comfortable with, whether you are a newcomer to using educational technology or an experienced user. We are presently working on a scheme whereby you can receive professional development credits for your participation in TNT.

We all realize the demands put on today's teachers and the many challenges that are faced on a daily basis. Although there always seems to be a variety of technology-based initiatives on the burner, in the end it is up to teachers to implement new technologies and their related strategies in the classroom. It is our sincere hope that all of us at the SCDSB will develop a cooperative spirit by sharing our individual gifts, and improve the quality of education for our cherished youth. It is an ambitious endeavour, but one which holds great promise for all of us. If we all contribute a little, then our community will gain even more.

If you have any suggestions, concerns or questions about the TNT or other SCDSB technology-based incentives, please drop us a line. We would love to hear from you! We really need dedicated and skilled people to take an active role in helping to develop our new programs.
