The Sudbury Catholic District School Board is committed to providing a full range of educational opportunities equitably distributed across a broad and diverse geographical area. Due to ever-changing factors such as mobile population, changes in funding, new legislation, changing in educational objectives, community aspirations and physical limitations of buildings, the Board is mitigated to monitor and evaluate all schools on a regular basis.

The evaluation of schools identified by the Board as being “Under Review” is conducted by an Accommodation Review Committee whose membership is drawn from the school and broader community.

The mandate of the ARC will be to study, report and make recommendations on accommodation options respecting the groups of schools under review. The ARC will be responsible for the School Valuation Framework, public information and access, community consultation and public meetings, and providing a final School Valuation Report and Recommendations to the Director of Education for presentation to the Board of Trustees with recommendations for their consideration and decision.

2009/2010 Accommodation Review: East Planning Area
Our East family of schools underwent accommodation review over the 2009/2010 school year. Schools in the east planning area include Pius XII, St. Albert Adult Learning Centre, St. Andrew, St. Bernadette, St. Charles College, St. John, St. Mark, St. Paul and St. Raphael.

At a Special Board Meeting on May 25, 2010 the consensus of Trustees was to encourage Administrative to move in the direction of 7-12 programming within the secondary schools and to dialogue with the Ministry in this regard. It was mentioned that the Chair should hold discussions with the Minister of Education on the matter. The Director indicated that the enrolment at St. Charles College and Bishop Alexander Carter CSS would be monitored. One Trustee inquired about the feasibility of placing a proper gymnasium at St. Andrew School and renovations at St. Raphael School.

The following motions were moved and carried:

“THAT the Sudbury Catholic District School Board not proceed, at this time, with the consolidation of any schools in this planning area."

“THAT the Sudbury Catholic District School Board directs the Director of Education to continue to monitor the enrolment at St. Charles College and continue to dialogue with the school communities with respect to the possible implementation of Grade 7 to 12 programming at St. Charles College."

“THAT the Sudbury Catholic District School Board directs the Director of Education to continue to dialogue with the Ministry of Education to advocate for capital funds for our aging facilities and to explore the feasibility of providing a gymnasium for St. Andrew School and renovations to St. Raphael School as part of the five (5) year Capital Plan.”

2008/2009 Accommodation Review: South/Central Planning Area
In 2008/2009 the South/Central family of schools underwent accommodation review. In May 2009, trustees voted to create a new 550 pupil place, “dual track,” quality teaching and learning environment in the City’s South End. The new school will also include a Multi-Media Technology Plaza based on an education village model, one-site, JK to Grade 12 campus. Trustees also voted in favour of closing four south end schools (St. Christopher, St. Theresa, Corpus Christi, and St. Michael Catholic Schools). The motion to close the four schools, three of which are PTR Schools (Prohibitive to Repair), allows the Board to apply for Ministry funding to renovate St. Francis Catholic School and to build this new school. Current students from St. Christopher and all of the Grade 7 and 8 students from St. Francis and St. David Elementary Catholic Schools will be consolidated into the “new green school” on the St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School site. Current students from St. Michael Catholic School will be consolidated into the St. Francis Catholic School (JK to Grade 6). St. Theresa and Corpus Christi Catholic School students will have the option of attending either St. Francis Catholic School or the new school (flexible boundaries). However, once the transition of the current students of Corpus Christi and St. Theresa is completed to either the new school or St. Francis, new boundaries will apply to new families. Trustees also voted in favour of renovating St. David Catholic School with regular JK to Grade 6 programming to include further community partnerships focusing on a holistic service model to serve the needs of this community.
