Our Kindergarten program begins with our caring staff, whose patience, kindness and empathy bear witness to their genuine love for small children. The program will provide your child with organized educational activities appropriate for young learners, taking into account physical, intellectual, social and emotional needs.
Our Christian Foundations
Our Kindergarten program ensures that the faith of our early learners is nurtured as they discover themselves in the traces of the goodness and beauty of God. Children are made in God's image, and God's design can be found in the developmental profile of the young child. The Sudbury Catholic District School Board realizes that childhood is a time to be valued and celebrated.
Social and Emotional Development
In order to learn effectively, children must feel good about themselves, about school, and about others. A prime goal of our Kindergarten program is to foster social and emotional growth through play. Children practice socially appropriate behaviour and develop self-help skills to assist them in working with new people and situations.
Physical Development
Our Kindergarten program includes daily periods of indoor and outdoor play, where children use balls, hoops, water, sand, climbers and tricycles to strengthen large muscles. Fine motor skills enhance small muscle growth and coordination and include such activities as: manipulating stacking toys, picking up small objects with the thumb and forefinger, tracing over simple shapes and designs.
Intellectual Development
Our Kindergarten program encourages children to develop critical thinking such as observation, compare/contrast, categorization and sequencing skills, to question, to experiment, and to develop creativity through language, music, the arts and drama. As individuals and in groups, children explore topics of natural interest to young learners.
Language and Communication Development
Oral language is the basis for literacy and our Kindergarten program provides students with enhanced learning experiences that help them acquire and understand oral language. Rich language-oriented activities, relevant to the lives of young children, are made available daily. Our early learners become familiar with the patterns, rhythms and structures of language and soon become motivated to discover the functions and features of print. They begin to experiment with the writing of symbols that are meaningful to them, which becomes the basis for later instruction in the skills of communication.
Children with Special Needs
Children with special needs are provided with the necessary supports within the classroom to ensure their needs are met. Maintaining a sense of community for all learners will support feelings of belonging and ensure that all members of the class can make meaningful contributions.
Differentiated Instruction
Our teachers provide differentiated instruction to support and challenge individual learners. Because children learn at different rates and in different ways, it is important to engage different strategies in instruction. All children should be given ample opportunities to explore learning through differentiated modes.
