|
March 30, 2004 -
Peter Irniq, Commissioner of Nunavut spent two days in Sudbury visiting local schools promoting Inuit culture and people. When asked by a student at St. Charles College, "How has technology changed the lives of the Inuit people?" Commissioner Irniq replied, "My generation is the last generation to live in an igloo. When I was a little boy my mother would communicate with friends and relatives in other igloos with tin cans secured by strings. Today I can contact anyone, anywhere in the world in an instant via the Internet and my computer." Commissioner Irniq had many other interesting stories to share with the students based on his extensive and varied political background. He has lived in several regions of Canada including Rankin Inlet, Iqaluit, the Western Arctic, Manitoba and Ontario. Previous to becoming Commissioner of Nunavut, Mr. Irniq held the portfolios of Social Development, Economic Development and Tourism, and Natural and Cultural Affairs. |
