CREATING WEB PAGES WITH NETSCAPE COMPOSER

CREATING LINKS - 15 minutes

What gives the Internet its real power is the ability to Hyperlink to other areas and sites. Check out the two short videos in this section (video icons above) which illustrate quick and easy ways to create links, including an email link. You can create a link by highlighting text, clicking the link icon, and typing in or pasting the URL of the page or site we want the user to visit. Steps for you to follow will always be in red. Let's get started.

1.
a) As you did previously, go to 'File' and the top left of this screen and click 'Edit Page'.

b) You will see this same page, which is now open in Composer. There should be a box directly below with a dashed outline. If there isn't, try again.

2.

a) In the space below this line, type the following line: Visit the SCDSB Home Page

b) Highlight the text you just typed.

c) Click on the 'Link' icon  on the top tool bar (or select Insert - Link from the top left menu).
d) A requestor has now opened. In the space that is labelled 'Link to a page location or local file', type: http://www.scdsb.edu.on.ca
Click 'Apply' and then 'Close'.

Congratulations, you have just created a link to the SCDSB main page. The colour of the text has changed and it is now underlined indicating a hyperlink. NOTE that clicking on the link now will not do anything in Composer, which is an editor. You have to save the page first, then re-open it in Netscape in order for the link to work. We will do this later in step 6.

5. Now we will create a target with a link within this page. Creating targets helps your viewers to navigate more easily through a page, as they can jump to a specific area by clicking on these types of links.

a) For this section, we will be scrolling around on the page, so you will need to remember, print or write down the following steps:

1- scroll to the top of this page
2- place the cursor beside the title
3- select 'Target from the above menu
4- enter the words: top of page
5- scroll back down here to #5.
b) Complete all of the above in 'a', then type the word Top in the space below.

c) Highlight the word you just typed, and select the 'Link' icon as you did before.
d) Instead of typing in a URL as you did before, click on 'top of page', which is the target you created at the top of the page, and then click on 'Apply'.

NOTE that clicking on the link now will not do anything in Composer, which is an editor. You have to save the page first, then re-open it in Netscape, which we will do now.

6.

a) To save this page with the links you've just added, click on 'File' and 'Save as' from top left of the menu.

b) Select a location (hard drive, floppy, network, etc.) and choose a name for your file as you would normally save any file.

c) Now click on the 'Preview' icon on the top menu  and this page (which you just saved) will open in the Netscape Navigator window - mearning that you will view this page in the user mode (meaning that your links will work, but you cannot edit the page without going back to the edit mode, which is Composer).

d) Scroll down and click on the links you made to see if they work. You must be connected to the Internet for the SCDSB Home Page link to work!

You have now learned how to enter and change text, add bullets and create hyperlinks. In upcoming  lessons, we will learn how to change the colour and other properties in a page, import images and create tables. You may now close this page as you are done with this section.
