CREATING WEB PAGES WITH NETSCAPE COMPOSER

PUBLISHING

DO NOT EDIT THIS PAGE - READ THIS SECTION ONLY, AND REFER BACK TO IT AS REQUIRED.

Once you saved and previewed your Web page on your computer (checking links, etc.), you may want to publish it so that others can access it through the Internet. You will publish your page to the SCDSB server, which is basically a computer connected to the Internet that stores Web pages, images, and other files. In this way, other people can view your Web page.

There are various ways to publish Web pages, and the SCDSB has made it easy for you through the publishing feature in Netscape Composer.

1. Open the page you wish to publish in Composer.

2. Click on the 'publish' icon at the top of the page, or select 'publish' from the 'file' menu.

The publish dialogue box will appear:

3. Page Title: You should have already given your page a name (setting page properites). If you haven't, you can give it one now by typing directly into the publish dialogue box.

4. HTML Filename: This is the name you saved the file under on your local computer or floppy.

5. HTTP location: This is the address of the server and directory and/or sub-directories were your file will be stored. It will be similar to what is shown above, with 'myschool' being your School's folder and 'myclass' being the name of the folder assigned to you. You will have to check with the CITI or IMS to obtain the exact address for your school.

6. Your user name and password will have to be assigned to you by IMS (teachers) or your teacher (students).

7. Clicking on the 'Files associated with this page' radio button will ensure that all of the images or other files on your computer will be uploaded along with the page.

8. Clicking on 'OK' will upload the file to the server.

Now you can easily update your pages by accessing them on the Internet, entering into Composer (File-Edit page), making your changes and then clicking on the 'Publish' icon.

Hey, where are my images?

The most common error made in publishing is not uploading the file images along with the page or getting the links to them wrong. If you find that your images are missing when you view the page on another computer, it could be that they are not on the server, or that the links to your images are referring to your local hard drive - not the server. You can check these links by accessing the page on the Internet, then entering Composer (File - Edit page) and double clicking on them to check the link addresses. For example, the link should be 'myphoto.jpg' or http://www.scdsb.edu.on.ca/myschool/myproject/myphoto.jpg - not 'C\|work/graphics/myphoto.jpg'. We refer to links as being 'absolute' or 'relative'.
